Remanufactured, Reconditioned And Refurbished Power Tools

!: Remanufactured, Reconditioned And Refurbished Power Tools

What are Remanufactured Power Tools?

According to a case study from Berkeley.edu, remanufactured means that power tools are remade or rebuilt with used products to a condition as good as new. Bosch is one company that is committed to environmental awareness, including the recycle-reuse materials component. Extensive quality control at the Bosch facilities ensures that the quality of remanufactured power tool is equivalent to the quality of a new power tool. Bosch also is reusing high-grade plastic polymers from recycled power tool housings in their remanufactured power tools.

Remanufacturing processes are very similar to manufacturing processes and there is certain criteria that a power tool needs to qualify for to be remanufactured.

Specifically at the Bosch facility:

1. The power tool must fail functionally meaning, there must be a "core" - a discarded, malfunctioning, or used power tool that becomes the remanufactured power tool.

2. The technology must exist that can restore the power tool to its original shape, condition and function.

3. The power tool must be factory-built, standardized, and made with interchangeable parts.

4. The recoverable value added in the remanufactured power tool is a high percentage of the power tool's original market price.

The advantage of buying remanufactured power tools is that you keep more money in your wallet. The retailer can price these at 60% or less of the new power tool price and still make a profit. You get to purchase a high quality power tool that has a manufacturers warranty and have money leftover for lunch.

So then what's a refurbished power tool? and what's a reconditioned power tool?

According to Dictionary.com, the word "refurbished" means: To make clean, bright, or fresh again; renovate.

On the other hand, the word "reconditioned" means: To restore to good condition, especially by repairing, renovating, or rebuilding.

If a seller claims that a power tool has been "refurbished", it means it has been returned, lightly tested, cleaned, repackaged and then resold. However, "reconditioned" power tools have been thoroughly tested, repaired (if necessary), cleaned, repackaged, and resold. Reconditioned power tools are required to meet the same stringent quality-assurance standards that a "fresh" power tool from the same factory would have to achieve. In fact, most power tool manufacturers offer the same warranty for reconditioned power tools that they offer for their brand new counterparts! The main advantage to reconditioned power tools is that you save money.

One place to get professional grade reconditioned power tools is TKRecon.com. At TKRecon.com some reconditioned tools cost as much as 50% less than their brand-new brethren. Buying reconditioned or remanufactured power tools is a great way to maximize your tool budget and still purchase name-brand power tools.

But be wary if someone is advertising a "refurbished" product.

Refurbished power tools have probably not been rigorously tested and are usually just eyeballed, repackaged, and resold. Reconditioned power tools are tested and repaired in accordance with tool manufacturer standards before being resold, so they are always the better choice.

Tips For Buying a Chainsaw Chain Sharpener

!: Tips For Buying a Chainsaw Chain Sharpener

You can find many types of chain saw sharpeners on the market. They run from the round file, manual operation, to the fancy electric ones that work well for small jobs, to the professional units that you can use to run a chainsaw sharpening business.

The simplest type is a round hand held file that you bring with you to the job site. It is inexpensive and works to get you out of a bind should you ding your chain in the field.

Even professional loggers carry hand held chain sharpeners. They only cost a few dollars, and can save you time and money if you cut wood for a business. You need to pick a file that matches your chain and the teeth pitch. The most common sizes are 1/4" and 3/8" files.

You use the round file along with a hand held guide that fits on your chain to maintain the correct angle as you sharpen your saw. This type is inexpensive and can be purchased for about in many hardware stores.

Moving on up you can buy an electric chainsaw sharpener. These sell for about , such as the Garrett Wade 115V 45T01.01 or the Garrett Wade 45T01.02. You can get these with an automatic chain feed.

Another type of chainsaw chain sharpener is a bar mounted guide. This types of sharpener can be taken with you and used in the back of your truck. The guide is secured to the bar of your chainsaw. These units cost about 0.

Finally, you can buy a professional bench mounted chain saw sharpener. This is what your dealer uses. Unless you are going into the business this probably wont pay for itself because you do not want to get a cheap model. The less expensive units do not cut the curved shape of the tooth.

If you do any amount of work with a chainsaw, buying a hand held sharpener to use on a regular basis between professional sharpenings will be the best investment you can make.

The Best Weed Eaters

!: The Best Weed Eaters

When selecting a weed eater for your yard it is best to do a little research about the brand names that you will be choosing from. Many companies have reputations in power lawn equipment, some good and some bad, so its best to read up as much as you can to make sure that you are buying the best weed eater for your lawn.

Husqvarna calls itself the  "global leader in outdoor power equipment." Husqvarna is a Swedish company and claims to have sold more pieces of outdoor power equipment than any other company in the world. The company owns other brands of string trimmers including, Poulan Pro, Weed Eater, Yard Pro and builds equipment for Sears under the Craftsman name.

Husqvarna is the official lawn care and landscaping equipment of NASCAR. Husqvarna has three different levels of string trimmers for its customers. The first is Professional Landscape and Ground Care. These are the best string trimmers that are out there. Made especially for lawn care pros these trimmers can withstand intense trimming for long periods of time. The second level of string trimmers is Landowner.

This group of string trimmers are designed for landowners that have large properties and the trimmers here are in between commercial and residential use. They offer comfortable ergonomic support and great results in less time. This group is best for farm owners. The last group of string trimmers that Husqvarna offers is trimmers for home owners. These trimmers are some of the best string trimmers that a homeowner can buy. These string trimmers are efficient and easy handling, and many come with a detachable shaft for attachments. After using any Husqvarna String Trimmer in action it is easy to see that they are one of the best string trimmers made.

The next company to make the list of the best weed eaters around is Ryobi. Ryobi is a Japanese company that is a leader in power tools. Ryobi weed eaters come in many different shapes and sizes, including straight shaft and curved shaft weed eaters, 4-cycle and 2-cycle engines, wheeled weed eaters and edgers, and 17" and 18" cutting swaths. Ryobi has created what they call the "touch start" engine that uses electricity similar to a hybrid vehicle.

This new technology offers that power of a gas weed eater with the cost effectiveness and low emissions of an electric weed eater. A Ryobi weed eater makes a great weed eater for any home owners lawn arsenal. This is why we have included Ryobi as one of the best makers of weed eaters today.

Finally we are going to look at MTD Products who makes Troy-Bilt and Cub-Cadet weed wackers two of the biggest names in the industry. MTD products got started as the Modern Tool and Die company in the 1930's in Cleveland Ohio. Today they are one of Husqvarna greatest competitors world wide. Cub Cadet weed wackers are made for lawncare professionals and home owners alike. When buying anything from Cub Cadet you will know that you are buying a brand name that has continued a remarkable tradition and reputation in power tools fro over seventy years.

Troy-Bilt weed wackers are common choice for the homeowner. They come in 2 and 4 cycle engine models as well as gas weed wackers and electric weed wackers. Going with a Troy-Bilt weed wacker will be a choice that you will be proud of for many years to come.

So these are just a few of the best weed eater names in the industry. For more information on the brand names that we have looked at today please visit their websites.

Choosing the Right Weed Wacker

!: Choosing the Right Weed Wacker

There are always sections that a lawn mower cannot get to, regardless of the size of the lawn. For this reason, a weed wacker is a good tool to have. There are three types of trimmers to consider before purchasing one; electric, gas and cordless.

The obvious benefit of electric weed eaters is the ease of use. This machine needs only to be plugged in and is ready to use. Another benefit is that this type is lighter, thus, more people can manage it. For the average yard, this kind of weed eater is a good choice because there is no running out of gas or waiting for a battery to recharge. A disadvantage, however, is that these machines are not as powerful as the ones that run on gas so hardier plants may have to be pulled by hands. The cord can also be a problem; there is always the chance of running over it, they tend to unplug at times and it can be a hassle flipping it from one side to the other so that the lawn can be worked on.

Gas trimmers are the most powerful weed eaters. They are great for thick grasses, rubbery vines or persistent plants. Another advantage is that there is no power cord to deal with. On the downside, however, these machines run on gas. Therefore, gas has to be purchased which takes additional time and money. If the machine runs out of it then the lawn does not get finished. Because they are powerful, and filled with gas, these machines cannot be handled by as many people due to the weight as well as the gas inside of it.

Cordless trimmers operate on electricity. They are lightweight, easily handled and can get at most weeds. They do not need to be plugged in or filled with gas. These machines have a battery and need to be charged. A disadvantage is that the charges only last around thirty minutes after which they need to be charged again. This kind of machine works wonderfully for smaller yards or yards that do not have many weeds. It would probably have to be recharged if working on a larger yard, however, or one with a higher density of weed which would make the yard work take longer.

Considerations before choosing the right weed wacker are the size of the yard, the amount of weeds, the person who will be using it and the amount of money to be spent. Regardless, a beautiful yard will be the result of a good trimmer.

10 Things To Consider For The Best Chain Saw

!: 10 Things To Consider For The Best Chain Saw

1. How is it powered?

3 options: electric, gas, and believe it or not - cordless. Deciding which one you want depends on your use. Cordless won't run very long, so you are limited to small cuts where you don't need much power. With an electric, you will be tethered (limited) by your electrical cord. A gas powered saw will allow you to cover anything from the smallest to the largest needs.

2. What is the length of the bar? (the bar is what the chain goes around)

18" is a decent size, but it depends on your use. To approximate how big a tree the chain saw will cut - simply double the bar length. In this case, an 18 inch saw will cut a 36 inch diameter tree

3. How big an engine will you have?

Obviously the bigger the horsepower the more power. Typical HP is from 2-6.

4. What is the motor displacement?

A good displacement will generally be between 50 - 70cc, with the greater the number the more power.

5. How is the chain oiled?

Keeping the chain lubricated is very important. Just make sure you know how it is done before buying. Most have self-oiling mechanisms, but just be aware.

6. How do you adjust the chain tension

It depends on the manufacturers, but you will have to periodically check and tighten your tension, so you want it to be easy to do.

Some manufacturers make their saws to have quick adjustments while others require you to do it manually. If you must do it manually, make sure the adjustment knobs or bolts are easily accessible and not hidden under some plastic guard.

7. What kind of break, or safety feature does it have to stop the chain if something goes wrong?

All should have a quick shut off, of some sort, in case of jam or kickback.

Some have a big plastic guard that gets pushed back and shuts off the saw.

Others have an inertia detector that detects sudden motion change and shuts off the saw. (These obviously cost more)

8. How does it start?

Most have a pull start, but more manufacturers are coming out with devices to make starting easier. Some "easy start" saws have special decompression valves while others have special springs.

9. How is the vibration?

Manufacturers try to minimize the vibrations and such are different for each manufacturer.

Just another thing to look for - do they advertise anything along this line.

10. Does it come with a carrying case?

Most do now a days. Just be sure!

If you have never purchased a chain saw before, these are just a few things to consider. Some models may not offer all these options and other may offer options not listed. In any case, having some prior knowledge about the basic features will help you tremendously in selecting that perfect chain saw for yourself.

Why Buy A Stihl BG 85 Leaf Blower?

!: Why Buy A Stihl BG 85 Leaf Blower?

The Stihl BG 85 leaf blower is one of Stihl's top of the line models. Some even consider it commercial grade - but all those homeowners with big yards, or lots of leaves to move, would have it no other way.

Here is a short summary of opinions given by lovers (owners) of this Stihl leaf blower.

Just about everyone comments and raves about its power. Unmatchable with any leaf blower anyone ever owned. It out powered Craftsmans, Ryobis, Toros and more. And, in one instance, although the statistics of Stihl's air movement or velocity are only slightly better than these other models, the leaf blowing was done in 20% of the time with less effort.

Owners liked the ability to not have to walk into the sticky branches or walk into their gardens to blow their leaves. It was quite powerful to do these things from a distance. Additionally, gutter extension attachments can be purchased so you don't have to go on the roof to clean your gutters. You can do it from the sidewalk.

Many comments were made about how ergonomically designed and balanced it was. Although it weighs less than 9 lbs, many thought this was quite acceptable - unless you have a super large yard to do. One fellow carried an Echo around the store for a while and then carried the Stihl around for comparison. He commented that he couldn't believe the difference between the two.

Others have noted the extra long tubes (and tips) that come with it. These were obviously well liked since they eliminate stooping when doing the work and the extra tips (with different shapes) provide for improved "impact blowing".

As far as noise level, it is a little higher than some others, but this comes with a catalytic converter to clean up emissions. Personally I don't know if this adds much noise to its use, but it is an excellent tradeoff to have a cleaner burning unit than a little extra noise.

Other features that were well liked were: the easy carburetor adjustment and easy start. Almost everyone commented about how it easy it starts after a few pulls. It also has a "cruise control" to control and lock in air flow and comes with small rubber feet to keep it from walking away if you set it down to do something.

Another very popular option (costs extra) is the vacuum attachment (and shredder blade). Owners were impressed with how easily the leaf blower converts into a highly effective vacuum/shredder which vacuums and shreds leaves, (wet and or dry) sticks, and nuts. A one bushel leaf attachment bag comes with it. Many were impressed with how well it handled the wet leaves - their other brands certainly couldn't do it.

All in all, this Stihl leaf blower is high quality, durable and meant to last years. While it is top of the line, and offers many wonderful features, the basics are the same across the entire line of leaf blowers. As with other things, you get what you pay for. You simply can't go wrong with a Stihl.
